Got the Look? How to Succeed as a Model

You got “the look” you have been told many times. You may also have been told you are good-looking, and that you should become a model. If you are serious about becoming a model there are tips and advice that can help you along the way. Becoming a model is a very involved venture, and it requires commitment, dedication, and determination. It also requires discipline as well. You may need to give up eating some of your favorite foods, go to bed earlier, and even possibly give up destructive habits such as smoking. Becoming a model is serious business for many people. If you have the look to become a model-or you believe you do-there are a variety of ways you can get started. First, you will need some excellent photographs of yourself. There are a few specific types of photos that you may need most of all in order to get started. One photo that you should have in your modeling portfolio (collection of photos of yourself, and/or compilation of your modeling experience) is a head shot. This would usually be a very attractive pose of your face, down to about the bottom of your chin line or neck. In order to become a successful model, you will also need a “composite card”. This is a picture of you in a variety of poses that will work for you. This card will feature some of the best pictures of you taken in different situations. For example, in these pictures you could wear an evening gown and standing in front of a simple blue, white, or black background, or you could be riding a horse on a ranch wearing blue jeans. Variety when creating a photo shoot is usually the key when you are first starting out, because potential hiring agencies and clients will want to see how versatile you are. However, if you know the exact requirements of a potential modeling position you may also tailor your portfolio to fit that specific modeling job opening. Once you have photos taken then you can continue findings as much experience as you can to build a portfolio. You may also want to receive more formal education, such as attending a modeling school. Usually when you attend a modeling school, you will be given further tips and advice on how to present your self and your body during a photo or video shoot. This will greatly enhance your chance of success as a model-knowing how to look and act. Attending a modeling school can help you in another way as well. For example, when you attend a modeling school you learn how to build up your portfolio, and how to seek out legitimate modeling jobs. You also usually will receive inside information that those who do not attend school may not already know, and the modeling instructors may have leads to modeling positions. Usually instructors can serve as a reference as well, to verify a model’s identity and reputation. Along with attending a modeling school you may also want to sign up with one or several modeling agencies. These are companies who act in the way that most employment recruiters would-they find you jobs. Each agency has different requirements that you need to adhere to, such as some only allow you to sign up exclusively with them. You need to consider your options carefully when first starting out, because you may want to be able to sign up with more than one recruiting agency. You also will need to learn what different types of modeling opportunities are out there. For instance, there are glamour or high-fashion modeling agencies that hire both petite models or plus size models. You also may be able to find more localized work, such as displaying women or men’s clothing in a department store flyer. If you truly have the look you will succeed. However, it is more than just looking good that helps you become a model. If you keep in mind all the tips presented in this article you are likely to have greater success at becoming a model. |
